If you are craving to self harm and you have a red felt tip pen handy, try out this method as some people have found that it helps them when they are craving.
If you have a routine when you self harm (also known as a self harm ritual) please ensure that for maximum effect you follow your routine as you normally would, but with a felt tip pen as opposed to a razor or a lighter.
What you do is very simple, you take the felt tip pen and you draw a red line where you would usually cut. The feeling of the cold ink as it reaches your skin will calm your craving and if you follow your usual routine, your brain will associate seeing the red pen with when it would usually see a cut or a burn.
This method works through associating what you normally do, and the colour you normally see with a different and less damaging behaviour.
