Alot of people find it very useful to counteract thier self harm cravings by using ice cubes.
You can hold them, squeeze them or rub them on your skin to help to take your mind off the cravings. This works by cooling the blood and helping to initiate what is known as “the dive response”.
The dive response is a reaction that your body has when it is stimulated by something cold. It draws blood away from your head and extremities and towards your core to keep you warm.
This is beneficial because as blood is drawn away from the head, any thought process not needed for your immediate survival are slowed. This can help with cravings for self harm, anxiety attacks and rumination.
